A supported smart speaker, display, or hub can provide the control layer; some also include a Thread Border Router. Verify the exact generation, supported ecosystems, Matter role, Thread capability, and whether local automations continue without internet.

02Smart plugs with energy monitoring
Useful for lamps and small appliances within the rated load. Check Matter/platform support, voltage, amperage, plug orientation, energy data availability, and behavior after a power outage. Never use beyond the manufacturer's permitted load.

Compatibility checks before checkout
Use the product's exact model number—not only the listing title—to verify support on the manufacturer's website and in the intended ecosystem's device directory. Matter is a useful interoperability layer, but device types, feature exposure, controller software, and Thread requirements can differ. If the device is Matter-over-Thread, confirm that the home has both a compatible Matter controller and a Thread Border Router.
For mains-powered switches, thermostats, locks, valves, and permanently mounted equipment, confirm the physical and electrical installation before ordering. Neutral wires, box depth, HVAC control voltage, deadbolt dimensions, pipe type, radio signal, and local codes can determine whether a product is suitable.
Account, privacy, and ownership questions
- Can core controls and automations run locally if the internet or vendor cloud is unavailable?
- Does the vendor publish a support period and deliver automatic security updates?
- What camera, microphone, occupancy, energy, and location data is collected, retained, or shared?
- Are multi-factor authentication, household roles, event logs, and account recovery available?
- Is a paid subscription required for recording, alerts, history, remote access, or useful integrations?
- Can the device be factory-reset, transferred to a new owner, and removed completely from the account?
Safety and professional installation
Follow manufacturer instructions, local electrical and building codes, and qualified-professional requirements. Do not use a consumer smart plug to switch an unsupported high-current, heating, medical, or safety-critical load. Smart air-quality monitors, cameras, leak sensors, and automations supplement awareness; they do not replace certified smoke, carbon-monoxide, fire, security, medical, or other required life-safety systems.
